Health education plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life for individuals. Increasing community awareness about health issues and diseases is a vital step toward achieving positive health outcomes. “Health education presents information to target populations on particular health topics, including the health benefits/threats they face, and provides tools to build capacity and support behavior change in an appropriate setting” (March 2015). In this assessment, I will propose three health topics for approval for a 30-minute educational session.
Depression
Depression is a mental health disorder that impacts mood and can hinder daily functioning. Raising awareness about mental health issues allows those affected to share their feelings and receive support. “Depression affects an estimated one in 15 adults (6.7%) in any given year. And one in six people (16.6%) will experience depression at some point in their life” (American Psychiatric Association). By discussing mental health openly, we can begin to eliminate the stigma surrounding it.
Preeclampsia
Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication that can arise after the 20th week. If left untreated or undetected, it can lead to seizures, stroke, and, in rare cases, death for the mother. Raising awareness about this condition is essential, as some women may not exhibit symptoms or may overlook them. Preeclampsia can progress rapidly and may be asymptomatic, making early diagnosis critical for the health of both the mother and the baby.
Diabetes
Diabetes is a condition characterized by elevated blood sugar levels, also known as glucose. There are two main types of diabetes: type 1, which can occur at any age and is primarily hereditary, and type 2, which is the most prevalent and often linked to lifestyle factors. It is important to raise awareness about this condition and its potential complications to promote compliance among those affected. Type 2 diabetes can develop from a precursor condition known as pre-diabetes, where lifestyle modifications such as diet, exercise, and weight management can significantly reduce the risk of progression to diabetes. “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy” (Feb, 2023).
